Mason, 5 years old, built this tower and estimated its height in inches. Here, he measures the tower to check his estimate. He continued to build, and found that he was able to estimate the new height with amazing accuracy! | ![]() Mackinsie, age 6, holds the estimating jar while Nicky, age 7, displays the chart used to track student estimates. Mackinsie and Nicky both estimated 29 dice in the jar; the actual count was 33. |
![]() A field trip to the Rueben H. Fleet Science Center and IMAX Theater ended with a bang, literally! The rhythmic performing group STOMP treated students and other park goers to a 15 minute show. |
![]() Hayden, age 10, plans and measures to create a scaled drawing of the wall map of the United States. Students in the middle and older groups undertook this cartography assignment as they studied the Lewis and Clark expedition.

Bzzzzzzzz-ness Math with Miss Suki!
Here, Natalie prepares a box for shipping queen bees. Natalie went to Glenn Apiaries to see how math is used in the real world of business. She typed mailing labels, wrote credit card invoices, charged the credit card orders, added the credit card totals and balanced this with the machine, and typed an order into the computer. Prior to her visit, Natalie had to figure out how to reduce a recipe for making queen candy by 1/5. This candy is used in the cages for the queens and worker bees to eat while they are being shipped. Natalie made the candy while on her visit and accompanied Miss Suki to the post office to mail the queens. |

Extended Studies Reach Out to the CommunityAll VES students participate in an extended studies program that takes them out of the classroom and into the community. This semester the Behind the Scenes group visited area businesses for a first hand look at how they work. Field trips took them to a diverse collection of businesses like Cinema Star Galaxy Theater, Callaway Golf, Jim's Signs, Nature Vet, Blue Zone Studios, and Fallbrook Art Studios. The Community Service group discovered how good it feels to give back to the community by gardening at Live Oak Park, visiting with residents at Fallbrook Skilled Nursing, assisting at Fallbrook Community Project, carrying out groceries at Major Market, and picking up trash around town. Their clean-up efforts near Fallbrook High School were noticed by FUHS principal, Marc Steffler, who sent a letter thanking them for their hard work. | |
