An Amazon Adventure: Medicine from the Rain Forest

IncaThe Amazon Basin is a prime source of raw materials for medical research and one of the last places on Earth to look for undiscovered species. Tropical rainforest's, like the Amazon, are a prime source of new medicines due to the wide and varied bio-diversity. At your local pharmacy, chances are one in four that the medicine you get are derived from a plant. Also, chances are one in four or five that a tropical Rainforest produced the original ingredients in that medicine. Some of these familiar drugs are hydrocortisone used to treat inflammation, quinine for malaria, and ipecac to cause vomiting in case of poisoning. The Amazon rain forest has given doctors drugs that show promise in the treatment of sickle-cell anemia, Parkinson's disease, hypertension, heart disease, and even cancer.

A United States botanist named Monie S. Hudson examined 1500 rain forest plants that he had gathered while in Costa Rica. He found that at least 15% had some potential in the fight against cancer. Physicians and pharmaceutical companies are aware of the rain forest's potential in the fight against such diseases and as a source of new medications. United States National Cancer Institute officials have said that destroying the rain forests would hurt in the search for new medicines and anti-cancer drugs.

During the 1960's, children that had leukemia, Hodgkin's disease, and other cancers had a 20% chance of long term survival. Now, children with any of these diseases have an eighty percent chance of surviving for many years. The development of two new drugs from the rosy periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus), have made the difference in the statistics. The plant grows in tropical rain forests in Madagascar. Over eighty alkaloids (organic compounds that contain nitrogen) have been taken from the rosy periwinkle, and of those eighty, six of them have exhibited anti-tumor properties. When it was discovered, the rosy periwinkle was being used by traditional doctors as a treatment for diabetes.

One of the more interesting developments of the last few years involves the native healers, or shaman, of the local tribes. For many years native healers have used the bounty of the rain forest to treat the sick. At one point, these medicine men were not taken seriously but today they are being afforded the attention they deserve. Medicine plant plots are being cared for by these shaman as they show the secrets to scientists from around the world. The more promising of the herbs are sent back to laboratories for purification, identification of components and possible marketing. If enough of the rain forest is protected, who know what wonders will emerge.

HEALTH FROM THE RAINFOREST:

Many secrets and untold treasures await discovery with the medicinal plants used by the indigenous people of the Rainforest tribes.

Cats claw is another plant in the Amazon basin that is being used for medical purposes. Una de Gato, as it is called in Spanish, is a woody vine that has been used for centuries to help heal a vast assortment of ailments. One of twelve species, Unacaria tomentosa, is native to Peru and has become a best-selling Herb in the United States. People claim that the Herb has been used to help overcome numerous conditions, from arthritis and allergies to candidacies and a weakened immune system. While there is no definite evidence that this plant actually has medical benefit, it is one of the many plants that are now under scientific investigation. (Nathan Nichols, et al 1996)

THE POWER OF CAT'S CLAW:

Cat's Claw, also referred to as "Una de Gato" and "Sacred Herb of the Rainforest," is the new leader in naturally occurring anti-inflammatory and immune-supportive agents. All Cat's Claw utilized in Life Plus products is of the highest quality and is harvested in the Peruvian Rainforest in a sustainable ecological friendly manner. Six oxindole alkaloids have been isolated from the inner bark of this wonderful plant. These oxindole alkaloids have been proven to provide a general boost to the immune system as well as have a profound effect on the ability of white blood cells to engulf and digest harmful microorganisms and foreign matter. This natural process is called phagocytosis. Other alkaloids and phytochemicals present in Cat's Claw have been shown to provide natural support against many viris. When included in the diet, they naturally insure normal blood pressure and help prevent inflammation, plus act as anti-mutagenic agents.

BerriesWHAT IS GUARANA? Guarana is the nut-like seed of the climbing vine known to botany as Paullinia cupana, Sapindaceae. Its natural habitat is a small area of the Amazon Rainforest, in the lands of the Maues Indians, just South of the Equator.

In its original form, the vine grew to as much as 20 yards in height, supporting itself on other trees, and carrying its fruit in the canopy. It has now been hybridized to a straggly bush, some 7 - 10 feet in height. It can be cultivated in plantations of all sizes, but RIO prefers to collaborate with the smaller growers who are still working the Rainforest in the traditional way.

Although there have been attempts to cultivate Guarana outside the Rainforest, these have been only partially successful, and the best Guarana is still to be found only around the little town of Maues.

The Indians were using Guarana well before the Europeans came to Brazil. The traditional way is to crush the seeds, mix them with water to form a dough, and to form this into sticks about 6 inches long and 1 inch in diameter. These are dried rock-hard, and represent an early form of preserved nourishment in a hot and humid climate unsuited to the storage of perishable food. The sticks are then grated, traditionally on the palate-bone of a large river fish called the Piracuru, and the powder is added to water or fruit juice. The Guarana sticks were very highly-valued by the peoples of the whole Amazon Basin, and were used as a form of currency from the dead-waters to the delta.

HOW DOES GUARANA WORK?

Guarana is a gentle stimulant that works both quickly and effectively, revitalising mind and body, and improving performance. Unlike Ginseng or Royal Jelly, with which it is often compared, Guarana acts very quickly - within days or sometimes hours. The former two sometimes require weeks of use to reach an effective level.

One of the beneficial effects of Guarana is the result of a clutch of xanthines, known in its country of origin as Guaranine. These include a tetramethylxanthine similar to caffeine, at a level of between 3% and 5%; around 1% theobromine.

CASHEW FRUIT:

In addition to Camu-Camu, JUNGLE ADE contains Cashew Fruit, also known as Cajueiro, Cupuacu, Maracuja and Guava fruits. Unlike the well known cashew nuts that are so popular all over the world, Cajueiro is a highly nutritious fruit. It is very peculiar and really isn't a fruit at all. It is actually a swollen peduncle that grows behind the real fruit, which is the cashew nut. This large pulpy and juicy part of the plant is actually referred to as a pseudo-fruit with a fine sweet flavor and aroma. The cashew nut grows externally on one end of it in its own kidney shaped hard shell. Interesting Amazonian folklore include the cashew juice as an aid for flu and colds, a sexual stimulant, and other things. Cashew fruit contains five times the amount of Vitamin C as oranges, too.

CUPUACU:

The Cupuacu fruit is in the chocolate family and looks much like the fruit of the chocolate tree. The Life Plus RAINFORCE makes Cupuacu fruit available for the first time in North America and Europe. Rich in phytonutrients with a delicious exotic taste, Cupuacu has been a primary food source in the Rainforest, both for the indigenous people and animals alike. PASSION FRUIT:

An important constituent of JUNGLE ADE is Passion Fruit. A certain species known as Maracuja, is the type that grows in the Amazon Rainforest and is the one included in JUNGLE ADE. Maracuja juice has been used a wonderful source of power packed phytonutrients as well as a good tasting fruit.
